FIRE OVER HEAVEN 2/15/24: WEBB CRAWFORD, PATRICK HOLMES & IAN DOUGLAS-MOORE

This month’s Fire Over Heaven show is curated by Ian Douglas-Moore, here are some words from him about the upcoming show:

“I’ve been thinking about tuning, listening, and slowness for the first concert I’m guest-curating at Fire Over Heaven. It could be the time of year, but more likely just my natural inclinations. The room at Outpost is a wonderful acoustic space for resonant music-making and I’m excited to put together some sounds to explore it.

In 2022, I invited a couple of musicians to play alongside a sound installation I created of sine tones tuned to the resonant frequencies of the room. One of those musicians was Patrick Holmes. This Texas-born clarinetist can be heard in explosive free jazz-leaning sessions with people like Daniel Carter and Sabir Mateen, but he’s equally at home exploring the corners of a just intonation tuning matrix composed by Fire Over Heaven’s own Che Chen. Patrick’s interaction with my installation surprised me in the best possible way. For February’s Fire Over Heaven, I’ll play a duo with Patrick. He will be on clarinet and I’ll be on electroacoustic guitar.

Webb Crawford is probably best known as a guitarist. They have played many NYC-area gigs in the last couple years as soloist or ensemble member with a unique approach informed by everything from free improvisation traditions to Piedmont-style fingerpicking. But they also build stringed instruments, both in the guitar family and modern reconstructions of historical instruments. Two of these — relatives of the hurdy-gurdy and the tromba marina — will be featured in Webb’s set at Fire Over Heaven. This is a rare opportunity to hear unique constructions of unusual instruments played by someone with a deep knowledge of the past, making music for right now.”
